What is sleep apnea?

There are 2 common types of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. A third form, complex sleep apnea, which is a combination of the 2 common forms, can also occur. Most importantly, in more severe instances, sleep apnea can be life-threatening.

This disorder is linked to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and liver disorders among other dangerous conditions. Because of this, it is important to receive a proper diagnosis as soon as possible.

Several symptoms typically characterize sleep apnea. These can include daytime fatigue and falling asleep during daily activities. You may have chronic, loud snoring or make gasping, choking sounds during sleep. Sinus and allergy problems or swollen tongue, tonsils, or adenoids can also cause or worsen sleep apnea.

If you believe you may be suffering from a severe form of sleep apnea, please call us at 740.881.2600 today. Or, request an appointment using our online form.

Chronic snoring & sleep apnea exams

Dr. Patel’s office provides comprehensive snoring and sleep apnea consultations. Here, we find out what symptoms you are experiencing and determine health issues that may indicate you have sleep apnea.

We will then refer you to a sleep center or provide a home sleep monitor to track your sleep patterns overnight. This test will help to concretely diagnose your sleep apnea and help us provide the proper solution for your care.

Treating sleep apnea

A common therapy for chronic snoring and sleep apnea is a machine known as CPAP. This device pumps air to a mask worn during sleep and is highly effective for those with severe sleep apnea. It can help you sleep soundly and increase your quality of life. However, traditional CPAP’s can be bulky, noisy, and difficult to sleep with for some.

For mild to moderate snorers and sleep apnea sufferers, an oral appliance can be an effective alternative. Your custom sleep apnea appliance will open your airway while you sleep. It does so by repositioning your lower jaw and comfortably holding it in place.

As a more effective form of treatment, we offer innovative digital snore guards. Because they are made using state-of-the-art digital scans, these appliances are more precise. And they can be made much faster than traditional snoring guards.

Infinite Smiles crafts your digital guard using 3-D CAD/ CAM technology to digitally adjust for an exact, superior fit. It is also made from material that is less likely to cause sensitivity and irritation.
